An Original Treasure in Utah, Braxton’s Barbershop and Shaving Parlor

Gentlemen,

As we continue the barber series we are pleased to write about our first U.S. barber in the series, Braxton’s Barbershop and Shaving Parlor.

In the beautiful State of Utah there is a history of hidden and buried treasures. One legend claims the Aztecs took Montezuma’s gold before Cortes arrived and hid it in Southern Utah. A hidden treasure typically begins with one man and one treasure. Braxton’s Barber Shop and Shaving Parlor located in Salt Lake City, Utah has only one barber and one 1930 Koch barber chair.

The barbershop’s setting is unusual because it is located in the Bonnevillains Speed and Hot Rod Shop in a 15 X 15 foot space. It is not uncommon to look out the barbershop window and witness a classic car undergoing restoration or modification. Not only does 1185 S. 300 West Street produce badass custom cars, choppers and restorations but also some of the finest haircuts in Utah. Braxton Brandenburg began the journey of barbering about 5 years ago and had the opportunity to own a shop in the Bonnevillains Speed Shop. The goal was simple “to bring professionalism and tradition back to Salt Lake,” says Braxton.

Although the shop is fairly new it is old because 95% of the items are true vintage and not replicas. Braxton collected antiques before he became a barber and much of it covers the shop walls. Some of the treasures have been passed down through generations. According to Braxton, if you look carefully “the pictures on the wall are relatives that date back to my great, great, great, great grandparents.” A short list of vintage items include an “1800’s old west Naughty Nellie boot jack, 1930s Glo Dial Ever Ready Neon Clock, General Electric refrigerator, 1930s working Philco radio, porcelain Lucky Lager sign, early century milk can used as a cane and umbrella stand…” You get the idea, right? Braxton says, “everything has been done before so I find influence for my shop outside of barbering and what I grew up around.” The shop is an original because it is a reflection of Braxton a mix of tradition, heritage and simplicity.

The shop operates on an appointment only basis due to size constraints and attention to customer needs. Whether they come in for a haircut or hot towel shave Braxton will make sure there is enough time to produce the best results. The appointments ensure that he will not “be rushed and set a consistent daily schedule and allow equal time with everyone” says Braxton. But don’t feel left out because there is a few chairs in the shop and people are more than welcome to hang out. The clientele is a mix of pilots to plumbers, lawyers to welders and everyone in between.  The individuals who come to the shop are friends and customers who will become friends. Braxton describes the shop as a “professional environment with a working class feel” and the people of Utah have spoken and voted him the Best Barber in Salt Lake City. Braxton’s approach to barbering is “take pride in the services here and do my best to make it the best!”

Just when you thought the story was pretty damn good it gets better because Braxton is part of a two man band called the Ugly Valley Boys (watch the video below). The band’s CD is on the Farmageddon Record label and their sound can be described as American Roots music a mix of country, rockabilly, back woods, blues and great story telling lyrics. The voice of guitarist Ryan Eastlyn is earthy and hearty. Being part of UVB allows Braxton to form friendships with many musicians and play at several venues including Viva Las Vegas 15. When bands or Farmageddon family are in the area they stop by to visit the Barber Shop and an impromptu Hootenanny takes place and “it is all for fun” says Braxton.

Amongst all the vintage items in the shop one piece in particular is Braxton’s favorite. It is “an old Old Crow whiskey figurine I got from my friend Danielle from 4 Miles 2 Memphis and Antique Archeology that is probably my favorite, makes me laugh every time I see it!” says Braxton. When I looked at all the pictures of the shop I struggled to find the Old Crow figurine. After closer inspection I found the small figurine on a shelf with larger items. The crow looks extremely dapper with a top hat, walking stick tucked under his wing and a pair of glasses. The crow seems to be a good symbol for Braxton’s shop; original and unique.

The treasure of Braxton’s Barbershop and Shaving Parlor is that it is an original barbershop with an original barber who has not forgotten his heritage. Braxton is undoubtedly inspiring others with his music and barbering craft to create their own paths of originality while bringing tradition and professionalism back to the craft of barbering in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Gentlemen of tradition and distinction should be original regardless of their craft, occupation or profession and heritage should never be abandoned.

Fight Winter With A Peacoat

Gentlemen,

With a chill in the air and temperatures dropping Ol’ Man Winter is here! Winter officially starts December 21, 2012 in the Northern Hemisphere and it is a good time to highlight a great traditional coat that will keep you warm and last a long time.

The Peacoat was created in the 1800’s and remains unchanged for hundreds of years. First used by European Navies the Peacoat was designed for warmth and protection from the elements. The coat is recognizable due to the wide lapels, double-breasted, anchor buttons and dark navy color. The Peacoat is made from Melton Wool and extremely durable. The name is derived from the Dutch word “pij” which is coarse cloth and “jekker” which means jacket. Eventually the coat used by sailors became known as the Peacoat.

There is much debate and controversy about what constitutes an authentic Peacoat and I will not adress that in this quick introduction to a great coat. Stay warm Gentlemen!

Shoes Are Essential

Gentlemen,

When it comes to style there is only essentials and essentials. Why do I say that? Well pants, shirt and shoes are essentials contrary to popular belief that shoes are accessories. According to my favorite MacBook dictionary an accessory is, “a small article or item of clothing carried or worn to complement a garment or outfit.”  The shoes a Gentleman wears should not to be overlooked or minimized because they are one of the few things that can speak about your personality, confidence and style without a word ever being spoken (see articles: “The Craftsmanship of Barbers” and “Mustache: Style and Personality”). In this article I will exclusively deal with classic dress shoes the style, color and manufacture.

Before we get to the nuts and bolts of the article, a good example of how shoes create an impression can be found on the hit show Boardwalk Empire. In the intro to each episode before you ever see the main character’s face, Nucky Thompson played by Steve Buscemi, there is a close up (click image above) of his shoes! Immediately you know his style and character based upon the essentials, heavy pinstripe pants with a pair of spectator wingtips. At the end of the opening scenes there is a close up of Nucky’s eyes followed by another view (click image to left) of the shoes!  Everyone who has watched the show will forever associate black and tan spectator wingtips with the character Nucky Thompson and Boardwalk Empire. The shoes play an essential role and speak volumes in silence.

The style of a shoe is often disregarded because it is viewed as an “accessory” and not an essential like pants or shirt. If you take the time to wash, iron or dry clean your clothes logically you should choose the right style of shoe. Would you really wear nice pants and great shirt with some raggedy ol’ shoes or awkward style? Not all styles are fitting either because the lines and contour of the shoe can demonstrate power and simplicity or relaxed and elegant.  The classic wingtip design is invading the market once again. Even tennis shoe companies (image on right) are making them! A few classic styles are displayed below and depending on the manufacturer will vary slightly (Allen Edmonds are displayed).

Once you chose the style understand that color will also create an impression. Some Gentlemen want to stand out from the crowd and go with a color that stands out (image below, 2 shoes on right are suede). While others want their shoes to be the building blocks and flow with the rest of the apparel. The shoe color should match or be very close to the belt color (as shown below/Allen Edmonds).

Now that you have chosen the style and color the decision of shoe manufacturer should be determined because not all shoemakers are the same. The craftsmanship is what sets them apart and it is not unusual for a quality shoe to last for decades. There are several things to consider: sole, lining, uppers and heel. Some shoes are re-craftable which means they can be rebuilt for a fraction of the cost but not all manufacturers offer that. A few notable quality companies are Allen Edmonds, Stacy Adams, Floreshiem.

Do plenty of research because some manufacturers may not have the style you are looking for. When it comes to shoes you will get what you pay for in quality and style. Just think of it this way, if you pay $400 (high end) for a pair of shoes that can last 10 (or more) years that works out to $40 a year! Although, the heel and sole may need replacing during that period. There is no piece of apparel that can give you that kind of life and value. Of course, you will need to care for them and not use them for jogging or riding your Harley.

In the end a dress shoe is a statement about who you are and where you are going. People will rarely notice the brand of pants or shirt but shoes will definitely create and leave an impression. Personally, I have heard more compliments about my shoes than any article of clothing!

Gentlemen of tradition and distinction have used quality shoes and only a few manufacturers still create shoes with craftsmanship and uniqueness. We should place shoes in their rightful category of an essential to style.

Eureka! Shiner Gold Pomade Has Arrived

Gentlemen,

The Greek mathematician Archimedes (287-212 BC)  had to solve the problem of King Hieron’s golden crown and when discovered a method to determine if the crown really was gold he yelled, “Eureka!”(I found it). When I heard about how Shiner Gold Pomade was founded the story of  Archimedes came to mind because it took 3 years and 5 laboratories to produce a water based pomade that met Shiner Gold’s standard.

The can is a classic looking pomade container with brushed tin and graphics located on the lid. The graphics printed on the lid are straight forward and classic with no stickers. So far just looking at the container you can tell this product means business. There is no feminine font or colors just classic style with out any clichés. I have to give Shiner Gold Pomade credit because they are bucking the trend and going with a classic appearance.

Opening the can you will find something that should not surprise you because it is clear gold color pomade. The scent is coconut with maybe some almond that is subtle and not too strong. The texture feels very heavy and does not have a gel-like feel, liquid and soft.

Now comes the test drive and this is really exciting because the product is completely new to the market (November 2012). According to Shiner Gold Pomade the product can be applied in dry or damp hair. I have medium to thick hair that is about 3-4 inches long. I tested the product for one week with dry and damp hair. The pomade is easier to comb and style with damp hair. When I scooped the product out of the can I was amazed because this stuff is heavy and the scoop was clean without any dripping or sagging.

To apply the pomade I broke it down (rub in palm) and worked it through my hair. If you apply it to dry hair I highly recommend using a wider tooth comb (detangler comb) first and use a pocket or thinner tooth comb (not the fine) to style. Once I combed it through I began to style and was able to create a slick back and part for a business mans with no problem. The product does not flake and is easy to manage. The pomade dries to a matte finish and if you need to retouch simply add a little water and work it through and restyle.

The difficult part to explain is the pomades heavy hold. The product does not harden like gel so there is no helmet head. The best way to describe the hold is by saying the pomade holds your hair in place and still feels flexible and natural. Almost like your hair is bound together into the desired style and the hair feels slightly stiff. The performance is amazing and the claim of “Heavy Hold” is absolutely true.  The product washes out easily with water.

After one week of testing this amazing product I am sold on it! I am impressed that it did not take half the can to get great performance and a little goes a long way. I will add Shiner Gold Pomade to my personal use because of the great performance. I think the fine folks at Shiner Gold Pomade have struck gold and Archimedes would yell, EUREKA!

The product may not be perfect for your hair type, style and preference but it is worth a try. Of course, there is no perfect pomade and Shiner Gold has set the bar very high. The pomade comes in two sizes; 4 oz and .75 oz pocket can. Also, for the month of December 2012 there is free shipping for US and Canada with a two can purchase. The pomade is already appearing in several barber shops and overseas.

I am not only impressed with the pomade’s performance but more importantly with the dedication and passion that it took to develop. On a personal note, Jimmy, I tip my hat to you Sir and wish you the very best and much success. Thank you for letting Gentlemen’s Avenue be the first to review your product and introduce you to the world!

Quality Craft Beer At The Modern Bruery

Gentlemen,

On January 16, 1920 the world for beer craftsman in the United States changed with the 18th Amendment to the Constitution known as Prohibition and the effects are still lingering today. The effort to ban alcohol consumption in the United States did not start over night and began in the late 1800’s with the temperance movement and by 1916 half of the country already prohibited alcohol coupled with the Volstead Act of 1919, alcohol became illegal and breweries closed. Once prohibition was repealed in 1933 many of the brewers did not come back and only a few reopened. The period of ordinary flavorless tasting beer was born and quality-crafted beer was destined for extinction.

So what happens when a Gentleman pursuing a law degree begins to craft quality beer? A craft beer company named the Bruery is born (combined Brewery and family name Rue). Ironically it was the law that almost killed craft beer and Patrick Rue a first year law student along with his brother Chris began to revive a tradition, quality crafted beer.

The Bruery is located in Placentia, CA and houses the brewery and a tasting room where the discerning Gentleman can come and have a few or more than a few quality crafted beers. You will not find any of the “Big Company” generic flavor beers, nothing that resembles Budweiser, Coors, Miller or any of the smaller labels they may own. The Big Companies have one focus to sell as much beer as possible.

The Bruery is focused on Ales and according to Benjamin Weiss, Director of Marketing for The Bruery “Ales run the gamut from stouts to IPA’s to lambics to browns. We like to play with our beer and get a lot of flavor, so ales are the way to go.” One thing The Bruery is not lacking is flavor and you may have a moment of “this tastes strange” (unfamiliar) because the Big Company generic Lager has desensitized our taste. What you experience at The Bruery is full of flavor with dynamic ingredients and only by exploring will you enjoy old world craft beer from a modern Bruery. When it comes to ingredients The Bruery is aggressive in creating a quality craft beer, “We’re influenced by all of the flavors, smells, experiences and cultures around us.”

The Bruery is reminiscent of old world beer crafting because many of the traditional methods are used. For one, the beers are not pasteurized, “We keep our beers alive. Many of our beers are cellarable for anywhere from 1-20 years and having live yeast in the bottle is what will help those beers mature with time” Weiss says. Also, the bottled beer is naturally carbonated “this is the more natural and historical way of doing things. While we do experiment and we do have to force carbonate some of our higher alcohol beers, we like to adhere to tradition when possible. Again, this natural carbonation and addition of yeast to the bottles allows the beer to develop with age.”  No-pasteurization and naturally occurring carbonation was not enough to create high quality craft beer because The Bruery also ages the beer! The process of barrel aging is timely and expensive but The Bruery dedicates approximately 50%of the production to oak barrel aging compared to most brewers that age less than 2% of their production. Currently The Bruery has a warehouse with 3,000 oak barrels.

The best way to explore the quality-crafted beer from The Bruery is by purchasing a flight (pictured right) in which you can mix and match several different beers and taste each one, just think a sampler tray. If you have no clue what to ask for let the friendly and knowledgeable tasting room servers prepare a flight based on your preferences. One note of caution, not all beers are year round so take note of what you like and find out what collection it belongs to; year round, seasonal, special, special draft. My favorite is Saison Rue described as “Belgian/French style farmhouse ale brewed from rye 8.5% abv” which thankfully is year round! The tasting room is open to the public, tours are also available and food trucks are stationed outside. A great way to really explore the beer is by joining one of The Bruery societies.

It took a few decades to prohibit alcohol and craft beer never made it back into the mainstream. In order to enjoy quality craft beer knowledge and exploration will be required. Many other craft brewers across the United States are making the journey in the marketplace. The Bruery is on a path with old world beers in mind and defining what quality crafted beer should be ahead. At last count The Bruery is available in 20 states and in Eastern Europe. You can always stop by The Bruery to enjoy, explore and experience quality crafted beer.

Gentlemen of Tradition and Distinction have long enjoyed beer and only through quality and innovation can the beer craft remain relevant and progressive. A hearty CHEERS to the men and women of The Bruery!

The Art of Burlesque Presented by Yadi

Gentlemen,

With so many entertainment choices today like Netflix, Red Box, $5 Movies, or your weird Facebook friend who posts strange videos why should someone consider the timeless art of burlesque as valid entertainment?  Good entertainment should contain important elements to get us to spend our hard earned dollars. Entertainment must be interesting, intellectual, tasteful, suspense filled, engaging, and yes….SEXUAL! In the pursuit of understanding burlesque I contacted burlesque producer Yadira “Yadi” Hurtado. So gentlemen, buckle up and enjoy the ride.

The art of burlesque began in the 1840’s in Britain and made its way to America a short time later. The burlesque would entertain the middle-class in a variety show format that parodied the operas, plays and behavior of the upper-class. The burlesque shows relied heavily upon comedy, music, dancing and striptease to get the point across. The revealing outfits went against the social norm for women of that day. The burlesque costumes challenged the norm that women had to be hidden by layers of clothes to be respectable. The women of burlesque did not simply put on skimpy outfits and shake what their momma gave them for money because it was a choreographed event and never intended to be stripping (complete nudity).

Fast forward to the present day and meet Ms. Yadi who began producing Rockabilly shows that included burlesque performers. According to Yadi, “They (performers) always got great reactions, which made me think I should do more with it. I decided to do my first full burlesque show which I themed ‘Candyland.” In the shows Yadi produces do not expect to see complete nudity so save the dollar bills for the admission and buy Yadi’s 2013 burlesque calendar! The burlesque performers have strategically placed pasties because the performers are focused upon the choreographed routine and engaging the audience in the striptease.

The striptease element of the burlesque show is not limited to the choreographed dancing but it also incorporates  elaborate costumes that are made for the performers. The costumes are not leftovers from Halloween or bought from a shelf at Walmart and Yadi said the “costumes can take months to make.” Every facet of the costume is designed to highlight the performers body and to keep the audience engaged. The burlesque performers have not only committed time to develop and learn the routine but they are also invested in the costumes (click on image above: Ruby Champagne/Model, Angela Morales/photography, MUAH Elizabeth Gutierrez).

The musical element in Yadi’s shows is traditional and typically the women are performing to the sound of the 40’s and 50’s but there is always the exceptions. You might even catch a live band performing. The art of burlesque is not only engaging your sense of sight but also of sound.

As burlesque has evolved so are Yadi’s productions because other elements are being added to the shows format. One thing I am very pleased to introduce to you is the Yadi Presents 2013 Burlesque Calendar (click image below) which highlights 12 burlesque performers (Dizzy Von Damn, Fever Blister, Holly Go Darkly, La Cholita, Ruby Champagne, Angie Cakes, Drea Dillinger, Sophia Sirena, Lil VonShtupp, Cinnamon Britches, Dolly Danger, Jessabelle Thunder). Trust me when I say this, Gentlemen you will not be let down by this beautiful work of art! The calendar can be hung anywhere; bar, billiard room, barber shop, garage, man-cave or whatever you wanna call it. If you are lucky enough to attend a calendar signing show the performers will autograph the calendar for you! The launch of the calendar is another reminder that Yadi’s burlesque shows are entertainment and art.

Another facet that I found to be amazing is the posters/flyers that Yadi creates for the burlesque shows. These are cleverly designed and should be highly collectible (*hint Yadi*). The design and layout revolve around the theme of the show. The posters/flyers are another piece of art that would like great on any wall! Look at a few examples below.

Currently Yadi is producing shows in Southern California but I am sure discerning audiences all across the country will want a high quality burlesque show in their town. While Yadi has yet to take her show overseas I highly encourage international Gentlemen to contact her and book some shows. Yadi plans to visit Europe next summer and that can be a great time to network with a creative and ambitious woman who is progressing the art of burlesque and I am sure has many more great things to come.

For over 170 years Gentlemen have enjoyed the art of burlesque and Yadi and other producers are keeping it alive for audiences today. The performers are women who are dedicated to their craft and should be honored with your support. As I wrote this blog post about Yadi’s burlesque shows I was amazed that the art of burlesque is the literal definition of art. According to my handy dandy Apple computer dictionary the defintition for art is  “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form…producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.” Like all art forms some suit your taste better than others but your preference does not negate other art forms.

The art of burlesque that Yadi and the performers bring to each show have a nostalgic feel and can transport you back to a time when life did not revolve around computers, cell phones and everything else  for entertainment and emotional power.

Gentlemen of tradition and distinction should enjoy art and expand your horizons of entertainment. On a personal note, I wish Yadi and the performers much success now and in the future and it was a pleasure writing about your art.

The Craftsmanship of Barbers

Gentlemen,

There are very few things in life that can speak volumes about your personality and give a
quality impression without a single word being spoken (read post about Mustache’s www.gentlemensavenue.com/mustache-style-and-personality/). One thing within your control is your hair. The hairstyle and quality of the cut can impress people before you even say a word and display confidence, style, attention to detail, masculinity, and grooming habits etc…. If you really think about it hair is a contrast to your face since the texture and color changes, skin to hair. There are 3 factors that I consider when choosing a barber or shop: 1) Vibe, 2) Personality/Attitude, 3) Quality. So as we get ready and groomed for the holiday pictures or any day of the year choose wisely.

The vibe of a shop is that feeling you get when you walk in the door and the barbers face is either screaming “oh God, I dont want to cut his hair” or “Welcome!”. The “oh God” is because the barber may feel he is too cool to cut your hair or realizes they may take more time to get your style right or they are A-Holes and they will not get my hard earned money. The “oh God” can also be due to the shop’s focus on another style and elitist mentality. On the other hand, the “welcome” reaction makes me feel at home and ready to trust my hair to a capable barber and give them my business.

Secondly, I consider personality/attitude to be important because if you are going to be sitting in the chair for 30 min to 1 hour you should have a decent conversation. I do not mean that you will spill all your family secrets or dirty laundry but you do want to feel like there is some commonality or friendship. When a barber introduces himself and shakes your hand it is recognition of who you are and courtesy. After some time your barber may just say hello to you when you walk in the door because they are busy on a cut and that is understandable but when you approach the chair a handshake makes a huge difference.

Lastly, the quality of a cut is what keeps you going back to the shop and giving them your business.  When a barber takes the time to ask you the details of the cut that reveals pride in their craft because they want to give you what you ask for. Maybe you will sit in the chair and say, “the usual”, “let’s go a lil shorter this time” because you are on the same page. The mutual understanding does not come on the first cut and sometimes it takes two cuts for the barber to understand your hair and style but if they are making the effort and the vibe and personality is good then stick with them. Before you get out of the chair the barber should let you inspect the work to see if you approve and make any adjustments where necessary. Never be afraid to ask questions or bring a picture of your desired style.

I consider barbering to be a craft because there is a tremendous amount of skill required to produce a quality cut. Moreover, the term craft signifies a profession and dedication, not merely a job. Not everyone who cuts hair is a barber. The difference is training and pride in their work not just maximizing the amount of cuts per hour. You may spend time hanging out at the shop shooting the breeze after your cut and have a few drinks while you are there. The barber shop is not only a place for grooming but also a hang out for Gentlemen.

A friend of mine recently said “I love being the town barber! I am: therapist, lobbyist, lawyer, teacher, parent, growchy ol man all in one day” and that is true. A true barber understands that each client is a representation of his craft and a walking business card. If the barber’s craft is worth your money dont ever cheat them on a tip and be generous.

Gentlemen of tradition and distinction need barbers that are craftsmen and if you are fortunate you will have the same one for years to come. Stay tuned because I will be profiling a few barber craftsmen on future posts.
