What Is A Gentleman?

Gents,

This article was not scheduled to be published but I realized I have not discussed the topic of being a Gentleman. The topic is important because our readers come from diverse backgrounds and from all over the world. In future articles we will explore the topic in depth but for now a declaration is necessary.

January 28, 2013

THE ABSOLUTE DECLARATION according to GENTLEMEN’S AVENUE.

We believe a True Gentleman considers and values their Style, Grooming and Life. Our motto is Modern Men of Tradition and Distinction and no matter where you have been or what you have done you can be a Gentleman.

A Gentleman can be full of tattoos and on the other hand have virgin skin. A Gentleman can be bald and does not need to have a college contour. A Gentleman can rock a pair of $15 wingtips from the local thrift store and also own a pair of $300 Allen Edmonds shoes. A Gentleman can be the town barber and on the other hand a mechanic or great surgeon.

A Gentleman can be Rockabilly, Psychobilly, Cumbiabilly or whatever other Billy! A Gentleman can be Punk, Hipster, Rocksteady, Ska, Northern Soul, Ragtime, Swing, Big Band, Jazz, R & B and whatever style or music you can imagine or conjure up.

A Gentleman is not based in social status.

A Gentleman is not based in culture.

A Gentleman is not based in ancestry or birthrights.

A Gentleman is not defined by wealth or possessions.

A Gentleman is not defined by music.

A Gentleman is not defined by apparel.

A Gentleman is who you are and what you do in life, plain and simple. More importantly you can be a Gentleman!

A Peacoat Anchored in Quality

Gents,

As a writer I rarely get blindsided by the subject I am writing on but when I began discussing the Authentic Model Peacoat with Sterlingwear, I thought it would be a normal review about a high-quality coat. I was wrong and I hope the following review conveys the depth and intensity of this amazing Peacoat.

Previously we posted a brief introduction on the origin of the Peacoat (www.gentlemensavenue.com/intro-peacoat/) and after receiving the Authentic Model Peacoat from Sterlingwear I need to add something that is often overlooked. Not only are Peacoat’s designed and utilized by naval personnel, they have also successfully transitioned into the civilian market like no other military specification item. The Hummer vehicle has transitioned into the sport utility market but it does not retain the military specifications. The Peacoat sold by Sterlingwear is cut from the same exact patterns as the U.S. Naval issue.  The only difference is the shell material that is slightly different from the military specs (100% wool) with 80% wool and 20% nylon blend.

The initial impression of the Authentic Model Peacoat is its high-quality manufacturing and military origin. The coat features a surprisingly soft exterior with 6 sturdy buttons embedded with clear anchor symbols. Some Peacoats are advertised as “Official Naval Specs” but are made of a rough wool exterior, cheap plastic buttons, and barely noticeable anchor symbols. The Authentic Model Peacoat is double breasted with wide lapels that remind you of its naval origins. The coat has two slanted pockets on the front and a third smaller pocket for change. The pockets are deep and fully functional.  One feature that may go unnoticed is a button located under the lapel near the collar that can be used to prop up the collar and fully close the Peacoat.

The interior of the Peacoat is fully lined with fleece making it both elegant and functional. The yoke (from about mid to upper part of the jacket) and sleeves are satin and feel very smooth and warm. Inside the coat is another slanted deep pocket. The back of the coat is vented with a two-piece tack. The Authentic Peacoat is Sterlingwear’s warmest coat due to the full fleece lining.

Putting on the Peacoat is unlike any experience I have ever had because you wear the coat and it does not wear you. What I mean is, while the coat is designed to protect you from the elements, and made with military specs, it does not feel bulky or awkward. It feels form fitting and designed to protect from cold weather. Most coats or jackets that are made to combat the cold are bulky and not form fitting but that is not the case with Sterlingwear’s Authentic Model Peacoat. The shoulders of the coat feel like they are wrapped around your shoulders and the sleeves are perfect in length. One interesting aspect of the coat is that the exterior pockets are located about mid length so that when you place your hands inside they produce a regal posture that is very masculine.

How well does the Peacoat handle real life situations? I did not want to write a review based upon looking at the coat or wearing it around the house so the coat and I hit the town for a few nights!

Night number one, I went out to check out some bands at a small venue. I decided to wear my ol’ cowboy boots, 501 Levi jeans and a button up shirt. Once everything was prepped and ready to go I put on the coat and took a good long look in the mirror and I was ready. The coat looked casual without being over the top. The venue felt a little warm so I decided to unbutton the Peacoat and I was fine. I received a few compliments and that was pretty amazing because it was dimly lit but people noticed I was wearing a Peacoat based on the unique design.

Night number two, I went out to dinner wearing wingtip dress shoes, slacks, dress shirt and tie. As I was getting ready I wondered how the Peacoat would handle the semi-formal attire. I put the Peacoat on and it had a completely different look from the night before because it was now elegant and classy.

Night number three, I attended a local outdoors artwalk on a cold night located in a “hip” downtown area. I wore Khaki pants, polo shirt and the Peacoat had a sensible and practical look.  The Peacoat kept me warm when buttoned up and if I felt too warm inside a gallery I unbuttoned it and I was fine.

All in all, the Authentic Model Peacoat from Sterlingwear is one of the most versatile coats I have ever worn and believe that is why it is successful in the civilian market. Other Peacoat manufacturers do a disservice to a great coat that has not changed in the last 200 years. Sterlingwear has been the sole supplier to the U.S. Navy since 1968 and continues to provide high–quality Peacoats to the military and civilian market. I applaud Sterlingwear and the American men and women who manufacture these amazing coats to the high standard sold to military and civilians looking for high-quality made coats.

Gentlemen of tradition and distinction have always searched for high quality coats and the Sterlingwear Authentic Model Peacoat should be considered because it has a versatile appearance and works well in many social settings.  Honestly I cannot think of another coat that has so many different looks and produced with excellent craftsmanship.

Reb Kennedy: An Authentically Wild Gentleman

Gentlemen,

I walked around a local venue called The Observatory and noticed a Gentleman standing off to the side with an intense look in his eyes like a hawk perched in a tree examining his territory. The stage and band were in his eyesight and he looked over the crowd as if he was measuring their response to the music. A few young musicians that previously performed approached and his demeanor changed. A few smiles were passed around along with handshakes but as soon as the musicians left the Gentleman once again intensely examined the stage and crowd. The Gentleman looked like he could spit into the wind and it would keep on going.  I am referring to the founder of the energetic and diverse Wild Records, Reb Kennedy.

The Kennedy family moved from Dublin, Ireland to London where they had a child named Reb. The first 6 years of Reb’s life were spent in London. Later the family moved back to Dublin where Reb spent his formative years, from age 6-20 years old.  According to Reb, growing up, “there were not a lot of choices: being in a gang was not for me, football I was a pretty good goalkeeper but not for me or music and I grew up in a house with music playing all the time (Roy Orbison, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis) so music was the only thing for me.” Not only was there music playing in the Kennedy household but also in local pubs. The young boy was influenced by music on all sides “I always liked going to the pub with my mum and dad and all kids do it in Ireland and there was always people singing and bands playing.” Living in an environment of vibrant and passionate music greatly influenced Reb and planted the seeds for his future.

When Reb was 12 years old his passion for music increased when he started to purchase records. He was determined to buy records and would save his pocket money (allowance) “until I could buy the records I wanted” says Reb. Some of his early records were Elvis, T Rex, David Bowie, Glitter Band, Kinks, Small Faces and Yardbirds. His musical taste was diverse and growing along with his record collection as he constantly searched for new and energetic music.

At the age of 20 Reb moved back to London and immersed himself in the music scene. His musical influences came from “many areas, I love rockabilly music and also love soul, gospel, UK first wave punk, ska, and 60’s R&B” says Reb. After 16 years in London the music scene was changing so he decided to cross the pond and move to San Francisco, California. According to Reb, “I came to the U.S. in 2000 and left London because the scene had become stale and old, no young blood and no young bands.” In San Francisco Reb began promoting shows with Rockabilly legends such as Hayden Thompson, Joe Clay, Narvel Felts and Dale Hawkins. It was not long before Reb wanted new and energetic music.

Reb spent a few weekends each month traveling to Los Angeles looking for something new and energized. He was “looking for the spark and found it with a young band called Lil Luis y Los Wildteens.” The next individual that caught his attention was “the mighty Omar Romero.” He decided to start booking local bands and created a promotions company called Wild Promotion. As with all things in Reb’s life he seemed to push the boundaries because after promoting these young energetic bands one year later he created a record label. Wild promotions “became Wild Records and this just seemed to fit the sound and energy, I wanted to be Wild.” The record label gave young energetic bands a chance to record their music.

Since the record label began in 2001 Wild Records has released 40-CD’s, 25-45’s, 1 12-inch record, 1-LP and1-DVD. The record label’s motto should not be surprising, “The Wildest Sounds Around”. Wild Records is diverse and brilliantly recorded by producer Reb and head studio engineer Omar Romero. During 2013 Wild Records will stop producing CD’s, they will focus on vinyl records and digital downloads. The decision to produce vinyl records is partly based on Reb’s love for the best and original sound available.

Don’t expect to find any lollipop or time capsule music on this label, Wild Records sound is very real and explosive. Wild Records has many different genres but are not restrained by them. Each band is unique and has the Wild Sound.  Here are a few examples of the genre diversity and Wild sound: Rockabilly-Omar & The Stringpoppers, 50’s Rock and Roll-Hi Strung Ramblers, Soul- Gizzelle & Alex Vargas, Blues-Little Victor, Surf-Barbwires, Rock and Roll- The Dragtones, Punk- The Black Mambas, 60’s Garage- The Hurricanes and Neumans. The Wild Family has about 17 performers with youth on their side because most of them are in their early to mid 20’s. Reb is constantly looking for new talent and every three months they hold auditions and receive numerous demo tapes and email inquires.

The bands on Wild Records are not restrained to the U.S. because they travel the world spreading the “Wildest Sounds Around”. According to Reb, “I think the demand is high because we are not just about 1950’s music but are about raw energy with a honest no bullshit sound that seems to be lacking in music at this time and I think people want good tough guitar driven Rock and Roll.” In 2013 Wild musicians will perform in Australia, England, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, France, Ireland, Holland, Germany, and Italy.

It is not surprising that Reb’s earliest memory of music involves family. According to Reb it was, “Sunday mornings and the smell of Sunday dinner cooking and music playing on the record player.” The Wild Records label is commonly referred to as the Wild Family because Reb has a relationship with the performers that goes beyond recording, shows, and touring; “we are called the Wild Family and this is how I run the label. Sometimes we help pay rent and get people out of jail. The band members come to me with all types of problems that I help sort out and I book shows for them (I never take a fee for booking bands)… promote them and not only deal with music but I am also part of there daily lives as well.”

The uniqueness of the Wild Family caught the attention of director/producer Elise Salomon who co-produced the movie Smashed that premiered successfully at the Sundance Film Festival. A film crew followed Reb for 9 months and produced a documentary called Los Wild Ones. The Wild Family is not related by blood or common ancestry, instead they are bound by their profound passion for music and loyalty to each other. Occasionally Reb has a Wild Family dinner and I can only imagine it like the ones he had as a child but instead of having music playing on records in the background the performers are part of his Wild Records Family. Reb understands the responsibility to the Wild Family is not just developing new and energetic music.

There is something sacred about music for Reb and the energy of the music fuels the journey that started in London and Ireland. Reb’s reverence for music is best demonstrated in his description of the sound of a record playing, “a needle touches the record and the sound that this makes can’t ever be equaled because the needle grabs the soul from the sound.” While Reb Kennedy is not a perfect man I believe he has a profoundly deep soul and is not reckless or destructive.

The story of Reb Kennedy and Wild Records is  about a Gentleman who is deeply moved by music and at the core authentically Wild. Reb is Wild because he does not allow restraints and boundaries to control the energy and passion of the music. Moreover, Reb’s impact upon Wild Records cannot be calculated because some of these young artists will pursue other ventures and have families of their own one day but will always have the Wild Family lineage.

The Craft Of Straight Razor Shaving, Schorem Haarsnijder En Barbier Part II

Gentlemen,

The importance of shaving can be traced all the way back to the Pharaohs of Egypt where archeologist have discovered copper and gold razors in their tombs. The razors were placed in the Pharaoh’s tomb to make sure they would be well groomed in the afterlife (sometimes their barbers were also buried with them!). Shaving is one thing that all Gentlemen will have to address, either grow a beard or shave. The craft of straight razor shaving has changed very little in the last few centuries and quality barbers are continuing the tradition.

Master Barber Bertus of Schorem Haarsnijder En Barbier in Rotterdam, Netherlands is well versed in the craft of straight razor shaving and teamed up with Gentlemen’s Avenue to produce this article. The founders of Schorem, Bertus and Leen, are Master Barbers and each have 22 years of experience.

The shop in Rotterdam has a French art deco mirror case that is an absolute eye catcher and dates back to 1890 (image on left). According to Bertus, “We found it in an antique store in Belgium and fell in love right away; all hand crafted drawers, marble plates and a 100 year old mirror in perfect condition.” The mirror case was made for a barbershop in 1890 and found a home at Schorem. The mirror case is not only decorative but serves a function because it stores clients’ shavers.

Schorem not only offers world-class haircuts but also two types of straight razor shaves, “original” and “normal”. The original is done with a shaver that belongs to the client and can stored in the mirror case.  The normal shave is done with replaceable blades or shavettes.

An essential tool for straight razor shaving is a double-sided strop that has a leather and canvas side. The leather side is used to sharpen the straight razor and the canvas side warms up the blade and removes microscopic imperfections. The strop is used before the shave begins and once during the shave.

The towels used by Schorem prepare the patron and skin for shaving and creates a memorable experience. The hot towels serve two functions: 1) soften the hair, 2) open the pores so the hair follicles will “swell” and stick out more. The hot towels are prepped in hot water with a few drops of lavender to relax the patron. Preparing the skin starts with a hot towel followed by massaging some pre-shave into the beard. Hot lather is then applied with a badger brush and held in the right hand and the left hand is placed behind the barbers back to keep it dry. Another hot towel is applied to the patron with additional hot lather. Finally, the barber prepares to shave by adding talc to his hands.

To get the closest shave possible without damaging the skin requires a two-part process. The first shave is done with the 14-step method and each stroke follows the grain of the facial hair. Using the 14-step method allows the barber to remain on one point so both the patron and fellow barbers will always know where they are in the shave.

Once the 14 steps have been completed the face is re-lathered with a badger brush but now the shaving strokes are slightly against the grain.  Schorem does not attempt a BBS (baby butt smooth) but comes as close as possible without causing trauma to the skin. The last hot towel is applied and a final check is performed before massaging after-shave balm into the skin. A cold towel is applied to close the pores, which causes the hair follicles to retreat into the skin, and to clean the face. The cold towels contain a few drops of mint to awaken the senses. The final step is to apply a little after-shave and talcum powder. The shave is now complete and the patron receives a quick shoulder and neck treatment with the Oster massager and a splash of aftershave on the neck. The tonics and aftershaves are kept in the freezer for that extra tingling feel.

A straight razor shave produces the best shave possible and gives you time to relax and enjoy something that Pharaohs, Roman Emperors and working class Gentlemen have prized. The methods used by Schorem may not be the same as your local barber but the key is to embrace the craft of straight razor shaving. Not all barbershops have a mirror case that is 123 years old but with proper training they can perform the craft of straight razor shaving and provide customers with quality grooming services and continue a barbering tradition.

A Gem That Would Make Vargas Proud

Gentlemen,

The great Peruvian born painter Alberto Vargas created images for Esquire magazine that inspired men during World War II. The son of a prominent photographer he was sent to Europe to study photography but instead fell in love with art. His life took a turn that no one ever imagined and when he arrived to the United States he was not the photographer his parents planned. Vargas became an artist that would change the way we look at women because he mastered the pin-up and created a timeless jewel. Sometimes detours in life can give birth to destiny.

A young lady from conservative Orange County, California traveled to New York City in March 2003 and fell in love with the sites and sounds of the big city. The experience was so great that in October 2003 she decided to uproot from Orange County and move to New York City. LIttle did she know but that decision would change her life. She quickly found a job and began to experience the sites and sounds of Manhattan, cocktails at South Street Seaport and the Lower East Side and the amazing Coney Island. It was a vibrant place full of culture and art.

One discovery in particular would give birth to the burlesque dancer, pin-up model and actress known as Ruby Champagne.  According to Ruby, “I discovered the New York School of Burlesque, where I started learning the Art of Burlesque and made a couple new friends who shared the common interest and love of Burly-Q.” Success did not come overnight because Ruby started as a back up dancer and modeling burlesque costumes. It is difficult to keep someone so talented and beautiful in the background and after a lot of hard work she eventually made her burlesque debut in New York.  By October 2006 tragedy struck her life and there were a few deaths in the family and she decided it was time to come back home.

The young lady that left California to explore the vibrant and culturally thriving city came back as Ruby Champagne. The dream of performing did not remain in New York and Ruby says, “thanks to the world wide web I was able to find connections to continue pursuing my goal of performing in Los Angeles when I moved back to California.” The opportunities were not limited to the Art of Burlesque but thanks to many friends and networking she was able to begin modeling as a pin-up. One great moment for Ruby was being crowned Miss Viva Las Vegas in 2010. Not only has Ruby modeled but she also ventured into acting. Ruby has appeared in New York City, Texas, New Mexico and throughout California.

A Ruby is among the four precious stones (Emerald, Sapphire and Diamond) and I believe the talent, skills and natural ability is what makes her valuable. The future for Ruby Champagne is bright and the possibilities are endless. She has a smile that can melt anyone and a radiant personality that is lacking in many entertainers today. I have no doubt that she will appear internationally and if I was part of the directing and production teams of Mad Men or Boardwalk Empire I would quickly secure her because I know she could stand her ground with Donald Draper or Nucky Thompson. That is my preference but this talented gemstone can succeed in any opportunity she is given.

Alberto Vargas took a detour from photography in Europe and embraced art that gave birth to pin-ups. It was an unexpected detour in Ruby’s life, while in New York, that gave birth to the great entertainer known as Ruby Champagne the burlesque dancer, pin-up model and actress. The young lady is courageous and found her art and is on the path to fulfilling her destiny.

Gentlemen of tradition and distinction have long embraced and cherished the lovely ladies of burlesque and pin-up. The art of Mr. Vargas inspired men in WWII to paint them on the nose of their planes and give them names like Georgia Peach and Sentimental Journey. I hope that modern Gentlemen continue to appreciate and be inspired by their beauty and talent because I do not doubt that Mr. Vargas would have painted this Ruby.

What Is The Difference Between History and Tradition?

Gentlemen,

Recently I met with my old professor and mentor for a cup of coffee that lasted over 5 hours. We stayed much longer than either of us anticipated discussing family, life and the future. During our conversation he pulled out a pocketknife that had a wood grain handle and began to talk about it. He told me “I really wanted this knife because it belongs to my father (90 years strong).” The knife is worn and over sharpened but he looked at it as if he had seen a precious piece of cutlery for the first time and said, “this is a banana knife and people in the packing house need it to make sure they have the right tool for the job.” His family owns one of the oldest grower/packing houses in central California (96 years).  I quietly thought, a Gentleman with a PH.D that carries his father’s pocketknife around, “you are a badass!” The knife is not a showpiece and he uses it often, noticeable in the wear, but it is a rich part of his tradition. Tradition is often confused with history and they are worlds apart.

History is the past and exists in events, memories and stories. Maybe you sit around with family/friends and the stories typically beginning with, “When I was younger we used to…” or “I remember…” At times there is distance and disconnect with the facts and genuine feelings can be associated with the memories. History is at the mercy of being able to recall the details with accuracy and often times family members or friends say, “No, it happened like this…” The saying, history is HIS-Story has some element of truth.

Tradition may begin in history but instead of being a memory it exists in the present. The origin of the word “tradition” comes from the Latin tradere, trans=across + dare=give (Macbook dictionary). The root word means to pass along beliefs and customs. Tradition can be created and developed during the present and continue into the future. In other words, tradition is active compared to history that is inactive. The tradition can be as simple as cooking breakfast for your loved ones every Sunday morning, playing poker two times a month with a group of friends or caring for your elderly parents. Either way, it is a repeated behavior based in your beliefs.

The only way history can be transformed into a tradition is by creating and teaching in the present. It can be something that you learned as a child and no longer practice and by taking action you create tradition. I have never heard anyone speak fondly of letting traditions die out and those that are established and rekindled can live on.

We at Gentlemen’s Avenue believe that part of being a Gentleman is being able to teach and create traditions with friends, family and the community because only then can we tradere, “pass along”, beliefs and customs to others. We believe in tradition so strongly that our motto is “Modern Men of Tradition & Distinction”. Everyone has different traditions, whether it is going to a traditional barber that practices the craft of barbering for a quality cut or preserving your fathers pocketknife. It is important to create and teach traditions to younger generations your children, nieces/nephews or apprentices.
