On November 18, 2012 we published our first article about Opening Doors and since then we have not only continued to write about Style, Grooming & Life but we also turned men’s publications right side up. We just celebrated our 1 year anniversary of The Avenue Men’s Magazine that contains no BS, no FLUFF!

Our websites first year produced alot of attention and we received a little over 1.2 million hits and this past year we increased to 1.5 million! It appears that individuals from all over the world enjoy our articles, features, reviews and FREE digital magazine.

We have written about everyone from world famous barbers Schorem Haarsnijder en Barbier from Rotterdam, Netherlands to barber legend and pomade pioneer Donnie Hawley to Reb Kennedy founder of Wild Records. We also enjoy writing about events, people and companies from all over the world.

We remain committed to being the best damn resource for men who seek authentic tradition and distinction. Being a gentle-man has nothing to do with ancestry or economic class but will always be rooted in the choices you make in life.

We are launching many projects in 2015 and look forward to a bright future of kicking ass and not even bothering to write their names! Stay tuned for the first ever modern history book about, The Revival Of The Traditional Barber Shop and the first ever Traditional Barber Journal.

More importantly we would like to thank you, our readers, who have not only liked and followed our endeavors but also shared our message and spread the gospel of manliness. Keeping The Barbering Tradition Alive, Schorem Haarsnijder en Barbier- The Avenue Men’s Magazine Fall 2013 Re-Release!

During the 1960’s and 70’s the Netherlands was heavily influenced by the Rolling Stones and the Beatles music, style and fashion. Young men wanted the Stones or Beatles look but many barbershops could not create it so they went to salons for haircuts and barbershops were becoming irrelevant. The music, fashion and style influence was so great the craft of barbering was beginning to disappear.

Two Gentlemen, Bertus and Leen are keeping the craft of barbering alive in the Netherlands and fueling an international revival.

Bertus was one of the last students at a barber school that offered training in Gentlemen haircuts. Sadly, the schools in the Netherlands only have unisex training where men learn perms and hair coloring.

Bertus and Leen, the Scumfathers, each have 22 years of experience barbering. In 2011 they decided to open a barbershop and according to Bertus, “we really wanted to open a shop for men only as an answer to all the unisex shops where men are forced to sit next to women with thousands of foils in their hair, getting a haircut by some sixteen year old girl fresh out of beauty school with no experience with men’s hair.” The barbershop is called Schorem Haarsnijder en Barbier located in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The word “Schorem” means Scumbag.

I was amazed to learn there are no appointments at the shop, Gentlemen, you will have to sit and wait your turn. You might be wondering what if a superstar or billionaire came in would they let them cut to the front? But according to Bertus, “we never take appointments, not even if your the emperor of China, we think one of the main reasons guys go to a barbershop is to escape from their every day routine and chat with their peers.” The shop is also “woman-free” because they want Gentlemen to be themselves without having to change their attitudes, jokes or personalities…..

The Art Of Pomade- The Avenue Men’s Magazine Winter 2014 Sneak Peak

In the 4^th century Sun Tzu wrote The Art Of War that detailed theories and strategies in sun-tzu warfare. The title of the book indicates that warfare is to be intellectual and calculating. Ironically the book is used in universities and CEO/leadership trainings to understand conflict and strife with the goal of overcoming adversaries.

The men’s grooming industry is in a major boom, $4.7 billion in 2009 U.S., and products are hitting the market at an alarming rate but water-based pomades in particular are making a deep impact. Many pomade companies have cordial relationships but I have observed their conflict and strife with scenarios that seem to be ripped right out of The Art Of War. Case in point, the cover shot for this article received some “concerned” feedback because certain pomades were stacked on top of others, as if, there was a hierarchy or supremacy. In truth, the pomade stack is indicative Pomade stack cover burgandy lo res of the products existence, i.e. Layrite was first and that is why they are on the bottom, not because they are inferior. I have heard stories of conflict due to using the same manufacturers and company espionage that will not be indulged.

Before I delve into the subject of pomade a historical examination is necessary. Hair products can be traced back to 3,500 years ago when Egyptians were using a fat based product to style their hair. The word pomade dates back to the 1500’s with roots in French- pommade, Latin- pomatum. Both languages have the same etymological root of pom- fruit, apple, which was the basic or main ingredient but in modern terms, the word pomade denotes hair ointment. Pomades origin may be in fat based products and fruit but has evolved into a water-based booming industry……….
