Gents,

One of the many great things we picked up during our visit to Ed Hardy’s shop in San Francisco, CA was thiskustom japan 1 great book by Michael McCabe, Kustom Japan. The book is published by Hardy Marks and edited by Mr. Hardy.

It is a great book that documents the amazing transfer and preservation of nostalgic culture in the land of the rising sun. Not only have they kept Kustom Kulture alive and well but they have made it their own.

One interesting feature of the book is that it is written in Japanese and English! Talk about dedication to the culture. If you are into Kustom Kulture, Cars, Style, and Art this book is a great purchase! Check out these images.

Getting Inked At A Traditional Tattoo Parlor

Gents,

This past Saturday, we decided to spend a few hours at the recently outside of tip top tattoo parloropened Tip Top Tattoo Parlor in Fullerton, California. The visit to the shop was a special occasion because I had arranged to get a piece done by guest tattooer Lisa Del Toro. I am a big fan of her art and tattooing and having the chance to finally meet her was super special.

Shop owner Dre Perales has a knack for creating amazing shops and is also the proprietor of Tip Top Barber Shop in Whittier, CA. A man of great diversity who can give a great fade and some of the best traditional tattoos around. More than just possessing amazing talents Dre is a stand up guy who operates from an old school belief of fairness, equality, and innovation. The shop exudes traditional tattoo parlor styling with the pinups and panther on the window declaring the mission of the shop, traditional and old school. The shop is all business and does not welcome “Drunk Kids, Brain Vampires”, which may be directed to the large college population in the area from Cal State Fullerton and Fullerton College. It is a warning and counseling session all in one, come back when you are serious and sober. Dre is not ashamed to put his tip top parlor counter and flash wallphilosophy on the doors before you ever set foot in his establishment. I would not expect anything less from Mr. Perales.

Once you set foot in the shop there is about 10 feet to the counter with ample seating and iconic traditional flash that is original DP (Dre Perales) and other artists adorn the walls. It feels like you have stepped back into time when shops only had flash on the wall and no special effects or ambiance to lure you in. From the counter you can see the artists only a few feet away engaging in their art, you get a front row seat to individuals who have made a commitment in ink.

I was stoked that Miss Del Toro would be in town for a few days and  agreed to tattoo me. Once I walked in the shop, I am not sure how she knew it was me but, she looked up and with a smile that could melt glaciers she said, “Hello Mr. M!” We have never met but something told me that not only was I at the right shop but the right artist was going to create lisa at tip top tattoo parlor smallersomething special with ink on me. I watched her work efficiently and intensely upon her client as I leaned against the counter like a child on Christmas morning waiting for my turn!

Soon enough my turn would arrive and she quickly ascertained the correct size and location of my tattoo and repeatedly asked if I was ready for it. I quietly wondered if there was an uncertainty oozing from my face. With precision and complete professionalism she began to pierce my skin with the machine and the motorized humm would fluctuate with the change in pressure and stroke technique. We talked about our life journey, ideals, family and peppered with the occasional “Are you ok Mr. M?” Not only is Miss Del Toro a great artist and tattooist but complete tattoohas tons of wisdom that she freely dispensed. Although Miss Del Toro knows alot of “influential people” she does not act holier than thou! The time quickly passed and after a few hours I could barely wait to see the completed piece.

The design was based on a traditional Ed Hardy design with a beautiful Jaguar and snake entrenched in battle. I picked the piece based on a similar painting that I saw at our exclusive one-one photo shoot with the legendary artist and tattoo legend, Ed Hardy (our Winter/Spring issue cover). To have Miss Del Toro create the tattoo on me was special because we “met” on social media a few years ago and I never thought we would actually meet, especially since she is based out of Las Vegas, Nevada and we are in Southern CA.

The Downtown Fullerton community has alot of history embedded into the buildings and streets that continually draws large crowds to the vintage stores, restaurants and shops. The consumers are seeking something that had been lost in America, pride and craftsmanship. Whether it is a barber giving a traditional haircut or tattooist creating artwork on the human canvas, people will always be drawn to quality and professionalism. Dre Perales has created a great shop that undoubtedly continues to create its mark not only upon skin but also in the community at large. The tattooers in the shop are more than able to handle their own, even apprentice “King Curtis (Kirk)” which I barely realized I was mispronouncing his name the whole time. Sorry about that. Thank you very much Dre for getting Miss Del Toro to guest spot at your shop! Miss Del Toro, words cannot express my gratitude for the piece of artwork you created, Bravo!

Is Father’s Day About Gifts?

Gents,

As Father’s Day 2014 is quickly approaching we all have some consternation on what to buy or what we hope to receive. The tube socks and inferior belts all remain in the same drawer and are occasionally summoned to display gratitude. Men’s fashion and grooming habits are redefining the modern man and hearken back to tradition and distinction. We are not only able to repair things around the house but can also rock a pair of cuff-links and wingtips! We have a few suggestions for those of you in the market for Father’s Day gifts.fathers day gifts ideas 2014

Power Tools
Just like our ancestors that fashioned tools from raw materials to improve their lives and create civilization we have many simple and complex repairs that require ingenuity and quality tools. One indispensable tool is the cordless drill, pictured is the Makita 18-Volt Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless 1/2 in. Driver-Drill, model XFD01CW. This bad boy not only has a bright LED light located above the trigger but also packs 480 lbs of torque!

Apparel
One major investment that can last 30-40+ years is a quality shoe and Allen Edmonds has been hand crafting shoes in the USA since 1922. The Dalton boot is a leather sole men’s dress boot designed with the wingtip Blucher, brogue perforations and medallion pattern. It is made of premium calfskin leather upper with orange leather lining and butyl double leather sole. There is a newly reinforced and strengthened pull tab and 360 degree Goodyear welted construction. Another great purchase is vintage “skinny” ties because they are more durable than modern ties and have the classic patterns that are sought after by classic gents. These can be picked up on Ebay or Etsy for the Mad Man in your life.

Grooming Products
Last but not certainly least are grooming products. Men take pride in their appearance and a quality shave (or beard trim) coupled with great hair products can set the world on fire! Water based pomades allow the user to easily style their hair with no flakes and washes out like gel. Shiner Gold Pomade not only has a hair pomade but also an all natural shave soap that prepares the hair and skin for the closest possible shave. We are so impressed with their products that they are available for purchase on our online vintage father and sonshop. To produce the best result a quality straight razor or safety razor is required and shave brush, sorry folks those cheap plastic flimsy multi-blade shavers will never work as effectively or economically as the traditional method.

The most important thing you can give to someone on Father’s Day is the appreciation and love for who and what they are to you. The individual may not be your biological parent but the bond can be just as strong. So whether you are buying the gift or patiently waiting for yours, please take the time and enjoy the day and make every day special with your Father’s.

I dedicate this to my Father, Mr. M Sr. who is no longer with us physically and there isn’t a day that I do not think about you and miss you.

How To Look and Be Tip Top

Gents,
There are many notions, ideas, and beliefs about sayings that have been tip top older genthanded down from previous generations but one in particular has really stood out and has become increasingly relevant and that is “tip-top”. You hear it spoken in various contexts and they center on appearance. According to the dictionary the word was first used in 1702 and denoted the highest point. The word has grown and includes excellent, first-rate, and very well. The term is used as a noun, adjective and adverb. The grammatical categories really blow the idea wide open and give a clearer picture of the word.

In the noun form the word denotes that something is at the highest point, for example the very tip-top of the mountain is 7,000 feet. In this regard there is a lower point in comparison Tip top mountainswith the highest “tip-top”. As an adjective the word means very good, excellent or great, for example the classic car is in tip-top shape. In this regard it is not low or poor condition. In the adverb form the term means very well which is indicative of action that brought about the condition, for example when Johnny uses pomade to comb his hair it is tip-top.
Now that the formalities of the word are out of the way we can plug this into men’s style, grooming and life.

There is more than just a technical meaning because it is a life-philosophy. No matter how you look at it, if you incorporate this philosophy into your life there must be confidence, pride and passion. The basis for being and looking tip-top is style, grooming, and life. The particulars are to be defined by the individual because there is no cookie cutter template, we are all unique. Whether it is going to a barber shop every two weeks or polishing your dress shoes there is a realization that your are the primary focus and need to feel and look like a million bucks! A man does not have to spend a month’s wages on shoes and a suit because denim and boots from the thrift store can achieve the same tip-tip top shoestop condition. The foundation is taking the time and extra effort to achieve a heightened and/or improved look.

My father taught me tip-top meant that a man should look good from the tip of his shoes to the top of his head. In order to look tip-top a conscious effort must be made to maintain a style, grooming and life but not just superficially because the conduct and behavior would truly depict if you were tip-top or in poor condition.Every man has a responsibility to pass on this tradition to younger generations but never in arrogance, always in humility. It can be something as simple as how to properly match socks with dress shoes and pants or how to choose the pomade that best suits your hair.

The Weight Of The World On Your Shoulders?

Gents,

Are you going through a crisis? Finances, marriage, occupation, relationships, health and everything else in between can create a crisis in life.  The term crisis is defined as “a time of intense difficulty, trouble, or danger”.  One of my favorite pictures captures a Gentleman walking on a narrow path, alone, and surrounded by nature. The scene looks tranquil and serene. The intriguing part of the image is that he is decked out with dress shoes, suit, tie, hat and smoking a cigarette. The look on his face does not indicate stress, sadness, anger, joy, excitement, pessimism or optimism. The Gentleman simply exists.

Life can be many things to many different people but one thing is certain, you can always adjust your perspective. Your reaction and response to the circumstance and situation can greatly affect your day-to-day attitude.

Life can bring some of the greatest joys as you purchase your first home or finally move out of your parents. It can also bring pain by the death of a loved one or a broken relationship. There is much uncertainty in life because we cannot and will not control everything around us, but the one thing we can control is our perspective.

Life can give you the opportunity to make decisions that will change or alter the path that you are on. Simple but not easy. We are all on different paths and at different points in life but rest assured if you are breathing then you have the opportunity to alter the course, one step and one choice at a time.

The origin of the word crisis comes from the Greek that means, decision or decide. Apparently, a crisis requires a decision and that is what typically creates the intense difficulty, trouble or danger. Gentlemen of tradition and distinction have endured economic collapse, divorce, job loss, war, and medical conditions, and in the end were stronger and wiser. In Greek mythology Atlas was punished by Zeus to carry the earth on his shoulders. Depending on your perspective Atlas is either holding the world on his shoulders or he is simply hanging on, either way he exists and does not let the weight of the world crush him or get away from him.

The Gentlemen Of Steel: Savills Barbershop

Gents,

In 1731 a street was built in Mayfair, Central London that became known for its Bespoke and continues to be the golden mile of tailoring; Bespoke is high quality tailored men’s clothing. The street is named after the 3rd Earl of Burlington’s wife, Lady Dorothy Savile and is called Savile Row. About 275 years later, a new high quality service was created for Gentlemen seeking proper haircuts. Joth Davies opened his first shop and paid homage to the principles of the legendary Savile Row with Savills Barbershop located on Devonshire Street in Sheffield, England. For centuries Gentlemen have flocked to Savile Row because of the Bespoke, and modern Gentlemen seek out Savills for high quality cuts, service and products.

It is rare to find an individual who knows their calling in life right after school but Mr. Davies knew the barbering craft was his destiny. It has been 25 years since he began the journey and has established two barbershops with influence beyond Devonshire Street and Chapel Walk. Born in North London and raised in Sheffield, Joth knew he could not sit behind a desk all day long, “I had to do something that would involve the use of my creative side.”

Growing up he was influenced by iconic films like The Godfather, Untouchables, Once Upon A Time In America. According to Joth, “I was always inspired by the clothes, furniture and architecture. It is an eclectic style that combines traditional craft motifs with Machine Age imagery and materials and always seems to stand the test of time and doesn’t look out of place today.” The décor in the barbershops is from the art deco period and gives  a nostalgic but modern feel. Some of the vintage barbering equipment includes barber chairs dating back to the early 1900’s, Campbell 1930’s hot lather machine, 1920’s club chairs and sofas to name a few. The passion for antique barbering was so great that Joth styled a shop around one of the Theo A. Kochs barbers chair!

The two shops have a combined 8 chairs, 9 barbers, 2 apprentices, and are located in Sheffield, which is the 3rd largest district in England. The Devonshire Street shop is “based around shopping areas, known for their small independent tattoo, clothing shops and variety of pubs and bars. One of the largest open areas in central Sheffield. You can find us in the heart of the Devonshire Quarter.” The fourth largest university in the UK is located “on the door step of Devonshire Street.” The Chapel Walk location is only “a narrow walkway away from the central shopping parade (mall) where all the larger retailers are situated, and at the other end is one of Savills patrons the World Famous Crucible and Lyceum Theaters.” Savills also has a contract with the Sheffield Theaters for their services.

The high quality services provided by Savills attracts patrons seeking classic and modern barbering techniques and won them numerous awards (2012 & 2013 The Star & Exposed: Best Barber). According to Joth, “Our ethos is built around traditional values. When a customer sits down in a chair we want them to feel like the only person in the shop. After a consultation we then cut their hair using barbering skills that have been handed down through generations.” Savills is defining the barbering craft in the UK because whether a customers comes in for a haircut, hot towel shave or shape-up, they walk out with the experience of being a Gentleman who is able to get away from the daily grind and take care of their grooming needs by experienced and established barbers.

282 years ago Savile Row began with a passion for distinct architecture and has become known for high quality tailored mens clothing that remains to this day. The shops created by Joth not only focus on barbering, but I believe they are making an impact in men’s grooming style and habits for years to come. Visit their website for images of cuts that transcend time and define modern Gentlemen’s style. While Sheffield is known as the Steel City, these Gentlemen wield steel barbering instruments to create new traditions for modern distinguished Gentlemen.

One thing that impressed me during the interview was that Savills is not only interested in cutting hair but they also provide aftercare for their clients, “There’s no point spending an hour making someone look great if they don’t know how to style their hair when they get home.” The attention to customers defines what high quality grooming services should be and is classic barbering.

Scotchology 101

Gents,

Modern Gentlemen are enjoying and re-discovering Scotch, so we thought it would be fitting to write an introductory course about this great Spirit. According to W.C. Fields, “the best thing for a case of nerves is a case of Scotch”. With that endorsement we set out on a quest to calm the nerves with the knowledgeable Gentlemen from Hi-Times Wine Cellars in Costa Mesa, CA (Forrest Cokely & Tobin Sharp). This will be our first article published in a Q & A format.

– What is Scotch?
Well the simple answer is: Whisky that is made in Scotland.
There are five specific and very different categories:

Blended Scotch WhiskyEasily the best selling of all the varieties, it is a blend of one or more Single Malt Scotch Whiskies with one or more Single Grain Scotch Whiskies that is crafted to a particular flavor profile designated by each brand and carried out by Master Blenders.

Single Malt Scotch Whisky: This is the second most popular style and the one everyone likes to obsess about. Scotch Whisky is produced at a single distillery from the mash, to the fermentation, to the batch distillation in pot stills using only water and malted barley. This seems like a good time to interject that all Scotch whisky must be aged in oak barrels for at least three years before it even can be called Scotch whisky. If there is any age statement on a bottle of Scotch whisky it must reflect the age of the youngest whisky in that product. So if you see a bottle of Glenfiddich 12 you are assured that ‘the youngest’ whisky in that bottle is 12 years old.

Single Grain Scotch WhiskyGrowing in notoriety, Single Grain Scotch Whisky is distilled at a single distillery but may involve other malted or unmalted whole grains and utilize varied still types.

Blended Malt Scotch WhiskyThis is the latest name to describe a blend of two or more Single Malt Scotch Whiskies from different distilleries. It has also been called “vatted malt” or “pure malt.”

Blended Grain Scotch WhiskyThis is fairly hard to find, but it is a blend of two or more Single Grain Scotch Whiskies from different distilleries.

– Does Scotch go by another name (layman terms?)?

Whisky, Blend, Single Malt, (The word whisky (or whiskey) is an anglicisation of the Gaelic word uisce|uisge meaning water. Distilled alcohol was known in Latin as aqua vitae = “water of life”. This was translated to Gaelic as Irish: uisce beatha and Scottish Gaelic: uisge beatha = “lively water” or “water of life”. Early forms of the word in English included uskebeaghe (1581), usquebaugh (1610), usquebath (1621), usquebae (1715).

– How is Whisky different than other types of alcohol?

It is distilled from grains and water to a proof that does not completely strip away the flavor of the original grain and it must be aged in oak.

– What is the process for making Scotch?
This is a fairly intricate question that has a myriad of facets, but I will try to simply outline the process focusing on Single Malt. First step is the barley is tricked into thinking it spring by steeping it in warm water until it begins to sprout. This process creates an enzyme called amylase which converts the difficult to access starches into easily accessed sugars. Then the sprouting is stopped by heating up the barley, a mash of the malted barley is made and yeast is thrown in to begin fermentation. After fermentation the ‘beer’ is distilled, at least twice in a pot still and the ‘heart’ of the distillate is set to age in oak.

– What are traditional drinks made with Scotch?

Well there are a few, but some popular ones are: Rob Roy, Rusty Nail, Scotch & Soda, Blood & Sand, Godfather, Bobby Burns, Whisky Mac, etcetera…

– What is important in choosing Scotch? year? brand? region? etc…

Personal preference should be the only governance in choosing.

My coworker Tobin Sharp, had this to add: “Though it is a good idea to sample a variety of whiskies from the various regions to see what tickles the palate, i.e., Highland Speyside against Islay, Lowlands, Skye, Orkney, etc. We’re also seeing many interesting choices in oak barrels used to age whisky in, from traditional sherry and bourbon to rum and wine casks, which influence the outcome of the whiskies in nose and palate.

– Give me recommendations for: Entry level, intermediate, Moving up the ladder, and I just got married and want to celebrate like money is not an obstacle!

These would vary DRAMATICALLY according to personal preferrence, so I usually do this on a “person-to-person” level.

My coworker Tobin Sharp, also had this to add: “Another place where sampling comes into play… 50ml bottles or whisky tastings are a good option. I tend to recommend Highland Speyside malts as a starting point with more northern distilleries and Islay whiskies for the  intermediate to ‘beyond’ range, with longer-aged whiskies certainly going ‘beyond’ in price, although there are some lesser-known aged whiskies that are quite a good deal when compared to their more ‘popular’ liquid brethren. You have to start somewhere so I don’t shy away from the more well-known brands, whiskies that imbibers will find at most bars around the globe, as a home base.”

– Any notable historical figures champion Scotch?

Too numerous to mention, but here are a few: George Bernard Shaw (pictured left), Humphrey Bogart, Robert Burns, Ernest Hemingway, James Boswell, Sir Winston Churchill, George Burns, Jon Bon Jovi, Johnny Carson, William Faulkner, W.C. Fields, Sir Alexander Fleming, Ava Gardner, Horace Hutchinson, Horace Hutchinson, Joe E. Lewis, Sir Robert Bruce Lockhart, Igor Stravinsky …etc., etc. this could go one and on. Here to wrap it up is a great quote from Igor Stravinsky: “My God, so much I like to drink Scotch that sometimes I think my name is Igor Stra-whiskey.”

– What resources do you offer Scotch drinkers?

Well other than amazing selection and great prices, there are several experts to give the “person-to- person” level of assistance empowering you by your preferrences, your budget and your unique needs.

My coworker Tobin Sharp, also had this to add: “We also offer a monthly newsletter with one to two pages of spirits reviews– Scotch is fairly well represented throughout the year– and it’s written by our man Forrest! These reviews tend to find a home in our regular spirits sections on our website.

Uncovering Barber History: The Waldorf Barbershop & Shaving Saloon

Gents,

Most modern craftsmen are first generation but a lucky few can claim second generation and there is the rarity of being third generation. William Finnegan started a tradition of barbering that stands at odds with time because his son and granddaughter continue the craft, and in the process uncovered a legendary barbershop in Dublin, Ireland.

The Finnegan barbering craft began at William’s shop in Inchicore, a suburb of Dublin. At the young age of 10, Liam started sweeping, cleaning and running errands at the shop. The barbershop was a mix of working class gentlemen with a laid back atmosphere and story telling. The common topic was the gentlemanly sport of boxing. William, an enthusiast, was enthralled with the combative yet graceful sport and coached for a period. According to Liam his father, “loved to talk boxing in shop. Back then boxing and barbering went hand in hand.” Not only did the working class frequent the shop but also the great Irish playwright Brendan Behan. The shop was a mix of society, culture and life that created fertile soil for the Finnegan tradition to take root.

The relationship between William and Liam was not only centered on barbering skills but many life lessons stemmed from the craft. One piece of advice that was passed on from father to son is, “As a barber you’d always have some money in your pocket, and always to be scrupulously honest in your dealings with everybody.” It is with that philosophy and training that Liam set off on a barbering journey.

After apprenticing for six years in Dublin he moved to London and continued learning the craft. The shops he worked in were from various time periods; the Victorian style had wooden chairs and rounded sinks in Angel Court, on Throgmorton Street and the Queen Anne style at the famous Savoy Hotel. According to Liam, “I liked that these shops were so very different to what was back home in Ireland…these shops were not so much nostalgic back then, ‘Old’ was not that popular then.” During this period customers came from all walks of life, bankers, ordinary folk, Steve McQueen, Rolling Stones and many more notables. Eventually he came home to Dublin and worked at his father’s shop.

If you happen to be in Dublin and walk along Westmoreland Street you just might miss the world famous Waldorf Barbershop and Shaving Saloon. The entrance to the shop is located on the street level but upon entering the historical building, built in 1894, you will find a stairway that goes below the street to a portal to 1946.

The original shop opened in 1929 in the Westin Hotel by Mr. Thomas J. O’Byrne, commonly known as “Tommy Two Guns”. He worked as a journeyman barber aboard Cunard Ocean Steamers in the 1910’s and 20’s and traveled to the United States were he was influenced by the modern decor of New York barbershops. In 1946 Tommy Two Guns opened a second barbershop about one block north in the Adare building. The shop was modern and reminiscent of what he experienced in New York. Essentially, New York barbering was transported to the Emerald Isle.

In 1969 the Waldorf located in the Westin building closed its doors and the Waldorf Adare, as it was called, continued the craft of barbering. The times were changing and so were the hairstyles. Soon after, the shop was transformed into a Spanish Style Café.

Liam was working at his father’s shop when the opportunity to purchase the legendary Waldorf came calling. Liam and his daughter Linda obtained the shop and started the process of uncovering a legend from the grave of linoleum, “The first thing we did when we took over the reins at the Waldorf was to bring it back to exactly the way it was when it first opened in March 1946. There had been some modifications to the shop, back when it was just an old barbershop, and not a vintage shop. But all the changes were just on the surface.” Fortunately most of the modifications done in the 60’s/70’s were only superficial and under the linoleum the beautiful original terrazzo floor waited to be unveiled!

The Waldorf is not a nostalgic themed barbershop because it remains in its original form and contains many barbering artifacts. According to Liam, “There is a barber’s coat hanging in the backroom that is 100 years old. Two of the chairs date from 1908. Let me just say, when I’m at the Waldorf Barbershop, there are always about a half dozen things 100 years old or so within 20 feet of me.” Having the original sinks, fixtures and décor keeps the shop authentic. The backroom serves as a museum of sorts for barbering instruments and memorabilia.

The Waldorf offers world class grooming for men by highly skilled barbers. Liam, a barbering legend, believes the barber chair is an equalizer of ego for the famous and commoner, “Yes, we see them come in to the shop they wait just like everyone else. After all where else would they go? And we treat them just like every other customer. The other way we look at that is that every normal customer gets the movie star treatment. The only time a famous person came in outside of normal hours was when Frank Sinatra was playing Dublin back in ‘86 if I remember correctly. The shop opened a half hour early to accommodate him getting an edge up.”

Not only is Liam continuing the barbering tradition but also Linda, his beautiful daughter, is following in her father and grandfather’s footsteps. She started working in her grandfather’s shop when she was 12 years old.  According to Liam,“She is the other part of the team, who along with Mr. H, drive the business forward. An excellent, word class and competition-winning barber. She brings the old styles to a new level of accuracy.” If you are fortunate to get your hair cut by Liam his approach is open and masterfully honed, “Every one is different – every cut is different, sometimes I don’t know how I’ve done the haircut till I think about it after. But I’ll do whatever is required to get the hair to sit just right.” Liam masterfully feels the cut without giving it too much thought and the craft is like breathing, natural.

The Waldorf is a testament to the tradition of barbering and is propelled by the Finnegan’s and the talented staff of barbers who are influencing barbers world-wide. According to Liam, “People of all ages want to look sharper and more groomed now. This applies especially to younger people. There is a huge interest in the kind of work we do, and a real interest and appreciation for the craft of traditional barbering. For me personally, I am very proud to be a barber. It is a great craft to work at. It wasn’t always seen as such. I believe my legacy will be having been a part of the reappreciation of this old craft.” The Waldorf barbershop, created by Tommy Two Guns has been in continuous business for 84 years, the Waldorf represents the golden age of barbering. Much like William’s shop, the Waldorf is a mix of society, culture and life with roots that are spreading beyond the Finnegan family and Ireland.

The Man With A Golden Voice

Gents,

On 307 South Broadway Street in Downtown Los Angeles, California is one of America’s first movie palaces, the historic Million Dollar Theater. It was built in 1918 by the legendary Sid Grauman and seated 2,345. The theater was created in the churrigueresque, Spanish Baroque, style with images of animals and allegorical figures of the arts sculpted into the building. The decorations are phenomenal and give the theater a magical and royal ambiance. Legendary voices have filled the theater, in the 1940’s Billie Holliday and Lionel Hampton, later Spanish language singers and movies entertained new audiences.

A few years ago I attended a show at the legendary Million Dollar Theater and the experience truly captivated the nostalgic and timeless wonders of class and luxury in a historic building. I heard a band and voice that would quickly become one of my all-time favorites, an 18-piece band consisting of horns, percussion and a golden voice. The great crooners heavily influenced the voice and the similarities to Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darrin are appropriate and not a stretch. Much like Sinatra and Darrin, the tone and power cause the listener to relax and creates melodic tones to the reality of love lost and found. The young man with the golden voice is named Frank, lead singer of the Wiseguys Big Band Machine.

The journey started in a place that is familiar to stars and entertainers because he was born in Hollywood, CA. Growing up in East L.A./Montebello he played the tuba in high school and a few years later started a band with his brother Art and lead trumpet player Robert Villalobos. They created a New Orleans style pep band that would eventually evolve into the Wiseguys Big Band Machine. The venture into singing began when 21 year old Frank performed at a local bar called Mr. C’s, “the owner liked that I sang the old Sinatra/Darrin songs, so he would have me sing a few songs for him and I would get free pitchers of beer since I knew the tunes I felt comfortable singing them.” The experience gave him confidence to sing in the band when the opportunity arose. Coupled with the amazing guitar playing of Rudy G, from Rudy G Y Los Hi-Tones/Barber at Sweeney Todd Barber, the Wiseguys are a sonic powerhouse.

Not only are the Wiseguys band mates but a deeper bond exists with two of the founders, Frank and Art, because they are brothers. The “relationship is solid we are brothers 100%, music just is an extra bond we share nothing better than having your brother with you on stage. When we are old we will have those memories, who better to share them with than you brother.” Watching the brothers interact on stage is an added bonus to a great show.

The name, “Big Band Machine” is fitting because they are versatile and explosive in their sounds. According to Frank, “we are not just a Swing Band, Rockabilly Band, Salsa/Cumbia/Mambo Band.” With Frank belting out the tunes and entertaining the audience it is just a matter of time before they are playing at the major hotels in Las Vegas because the entire band gets involved in the entertainment. It is not rare to see Frank engage the audience to sing or the band members stand up as they play their brasses off! Watching his older brother Art pound away on the drums is a visual gem. One interesting aspect of the show is Rudy and Frank interacting on stage as if they were both in unison and at times it is comedic. The Wiseguys put on a world-class performance of timeless classics that are given new life by the musicians of the Big Band Machine.

I have no doubt the future is bright and their name will be in lights. Many great voices filled the Million Dollar Theater in its heyday and Frank not only pays tribute to the music that inspired him but also renews the love for Sinatra/Darrin to audiences that are flocking to their shows. When I asked Frank to describe the music his answer demonstrated the key to their success, “good music played and performed with nothing but respect for the music and the audience.” With two studio CD’s, All In and Double Down, one live CD Bootleg Swing, the Wiseguys will continue to entertain audiences who love good music and entertainment.
